Charles Richardson Miles papers, 1879-1904.

Papers consist of three letterpress copybooks containing tissue copies of correspondence, legal opinions, accounts, and other items. First volume (1883-1885) contains copies of official opinions of Charles Richardson Miles as South Carolina Attorney General addressed to the Sinking Fund Commissions of Charleston (S.C.) and the state of South Carolina, the South Carolina Railroad Commission, and Governor Hugh Smith Thompson. These opinions concern the legal status of Beresford Bounty lands in Berkeley County (S.C.) and other properties in Charleston (S.C.) forfeited for non-payment of taxes; grievances against the South Carolina Railroad Commission; the regulation of rail passenger and freight rates; racial discrimination in train accommodations; and the tenure of trial justices in several counties. Includes a name index. Second volume (1879-1888, 1892) chiefly contains accounts of estate, business, personal, and financial transactions of Miles' clients, including Harriott Horry Rutledge Ravenel, the estate of St. Julien Ravenel, and members of the Izard family. Also included are registers of Miles' meetings with and transactions for the Pacific Guano Co. and the Charleston Calcined Marl Co. In addition, there is a copy of a letter (1882) to James Petigru Lesesne advising him about South Carolina election laws. First part of the third volume contains copies of Miles' official letters (1888-1892) as master-in-equity to Governor Benjamin R. Tillman and other officials and citizens regarding the requests of direct tax claimants, conflicting interpretations of the Master's authority, routine office operations, and other matters. The remainder of the volume contains copies of letters (1897-1904) of Arthur Mazyck in his capacity as acting Secretary of the College of Charleston Board of Trustees. Letters concern exams, preparation of the school calendar, faculty appointments, promotions and resignations, and other matters.
